From the 1800's to 2000 the area has displayed the highest growth and development. This growth continues through agencies such as The Northern Development Company, Tyne and Wear Development Company and now OneNorthEast. The local authorities are supporting the many millennium projects in the area which include Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend, Baltic Mills and Centre for Life at Newcastle.

In 1987 Hadrian's Wall and it's associated features were designated a 'World Heritage Site'. Consequently the eastern terminus fort at Segedunum, Wallsend was excavated and these sections of the Wall must be considered as the most important historical monument to be found in the North in recent years, with both National and International significance.
