The town of Wallsend rests at the Roman Fort of Segedunum at end of Hadrian's Wall, a 'World Heritage Site'. The North East of England sits on the original line of Hadrian's Wall and at the end of the ancient Roman Empire.
Wallsend town is a busy area with strong community links. The next few years hold the greatest potential for tourism in Wallsend with the opening of the new 'Roman Fort and Museum Visitors Centre' at Buddle Street.
The Wall is the only Roman World Heritage site in Britain and is the
largest of all the Roman examples in Britain. Its universal significance
lies in its complexity and high level of survival as the most elaborate
of all the frontier works of the Roman Empire.

In 1987 Hadrian's Wall and it's associated features were designated a 'World Heritage Site'. Consequently the eastern terminus fort at Segedunum was excavated and these sections together with the rest of the Wall must be considered as the most important historical monument to be found in the North, with both National and International significance. The unique features of the cavalry blocks at 'Segedunum' the Wallsend Fort have provided valuable evidence for the arrangements provided by the Romans for their men and horses.

From the 1800's to 2000 the area has displayed the highest growth and industrial development. Innovation and industrial change are nothing new for the North East. It was one of the cradles of the industrial revolution, boasting major figures such as locomotive pioneer George Stephenson, the inventor of the steam turbine Charles Parsons and Joseph Swan who turned Mosley Street in Newcastle into the first street in the world to be lit by electricity. This growth continues through agencies such as The Northern Development Company, Tyne and Wear Development Company and now OneNorthEast. The local municipal councils are supporting the many millennium projects in the area which include Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend, Baltic Mills, Gateshead and the Centre for Life at Newcastle.
