From the 1800's to 2000 the area has displayed the highest growth and development. Innovation and industrial change are nothing new for the North East. It was one of the cradles of the industrial revolution, boasting major figures such as locomotive pioneer George Stephenson, the inventor of the steam turbine Charles Parsons and Joseph Swan who turned Mosley Street in Newcastle into the first street in the world to be lit by electricity. This growth continues through agencies such as The Northern Development Company, Tyne and Wear Development Company and now OneNorthEast. The local municipal councils are supporting the many millennium projects in the area which include Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend and Centre for Life at Newcastle.

In 1987 Hadrian's Wall and it's associated features were designated
a 'World Heritage Site'. Consequently the eastern terminus fort at Segedunum
was excavated and these sections of the Wall must be considered as the
most important historical monument to be found in the North, with both
National and International significance.
